Fluency (Stuttering)

Fluency refers to our ability to speak smoothly or without stuttering.

If your child has a stutter, you may notice their speech includes:

  • Repetitions: repeating sounds, words, or phrases (e.g., “M-m-my mom”)

  • Prolongations: stretching sounds out in words (e.g., “Mmmmmmmy mom”)

  • Blocks: difficulty getting a word out, getting stuck on a word (e.g., “My (pause) mom”)

Speech-language therapy can help children who stutter.
